Intro- My Story:

I am Esther Slattery, a Black Londoner, mother of two; Nurse, Therapist, Yoga Teacher and Mindfulness Trainer.

Creating a Nurture-Hub- brimming with welcome, compassion and human kinship-has been a dream for the last 5 years. I believe that a community is the best medicine and antidote against emotional and social ill-health and I have been very lucky in my life to have had experience of belonging to amazing communities. Things have changed over time and these communities are fast becoming a distant memory.  I hope that in time, people will join me at the Hub and Esther’s Nurture-Hub will become The Nurture-Hub, for all of us.

Qualifications

Master in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (Oxford University 2018)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapist- Kings College London (2010): I have been practicing CBT in IAPT services for over 10 years. I have undertaken further studies in trauma work, (including ENDR and Narrative Exposure Therapy), Mindfulness Self-compassion, working with long-term conditions and CBT supervision. I am a CBT supervisor.

My background as a specialist community mental health Nurse provided a strong foundation and experience of working with people from different communities in an inclusive and empowering way. It gave me insight into the debilitating effect of mental ill-health not just on the patient, but on the family and communities.

Early partial retirement in 2019 has given me the precious gift of time which enables me to give back to the community through social change, which is the broad aim of the Nurture-Hub.

Yoga4Nurture is a community interest company limited by guarantee and incorporated in 2019.

Yoga4nurture has been providing free yoga classes generously supported in part by Dana from a few regular students. The concept of generosity – “giving freely” is central to both yoga and mindfulness and has been part of yoga and meditation since the start, for over two thousand years. This was the way I experienced yoga and meditation when I started and I wanted to say thank you to my teachers by passing on the gift. This concept is crucial for social justice as it allows those who would otherwise be excluded to participate as equals.

Yoga4Nurture mission is that everyone deserves to learn and practice yoga in a supportive environment irrespective of ability to pay. In a world where yoga has become a commodity, we are proud to maintain the original inclusive philosophy which allows people from different walks of life to come together and share a practice.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

CBT is an effective, evidence based therapy that is widely used for a wide range of conditions ranging from depression and anxiety to building self-esteem, substance use and psychosis. There are a wide range of strategies which come under CBT and these are used selectively, in a structured manner to meet individual needs. The choice of strategies is informed by the individual’s needs and conceptualised to wrap around the individual.  Most of the strategies are also effective in people without distress for building on wellness to promote flourishing.

Mindfulness

Esther gained her masters of studies degree from Oxford University in 2018. The philosophy of yoga is surprisingly very similar to the philosophy of CBT and Esther decided to train to teach mindfulness as a way of further understanding the science.

“The Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy masters program at Oxford University was the most intense, wonderful and affirming experience offering grounding in knowledge, skills and practice, combining scientific rigour of modern science with the ancient art of meditation and wisdom”

Yoga

Esther started practicing yoga in 1980s and was lucky enough to find a local Triratna community (then the Friends of Western Buddha) in Croydon where she went for yoga and meditation. She trained to teach under Bram Williams (Bodhi yoga) undertaking the British Wheel of yoga (BWY) Diploma from 2012 to 2015. She is registered with the BWY.

Life Coaching

Esther is currently undertaking the personal coaching diploma at the coaching academy and all coaching is offered probono until she is qualified.
